CHAPTER 13

Hooked

Two weeks had passed since meeting Amelia and Emmeline. Lonzo had done little on the job besides paperwork, which he knew more thoroughly than he thought possible. Captain Bertram had made sure of that. Lonzo read every report that came in and now knew that the style didn’t matter as long as every important detail was in there.

It wasn’t normal to follow up, but Captain Bertram let him do so with Amelia and Emmeline. Lonzo went to the mansion and found that they were doing well. Their father, Mr. Wilson, had started helping clean and fix things up as well as find reliable servants.

Lonzo knew he wouldn’t always be able to see a job through to its conclusion, but he was thankful his first one was close to home. Or office anyway.

But today, Lonzo guessed things were going to change. He stepped into the dark office and waited for his eyes to adjust.

“Mornin’, Priscilla. How’s the family?”

The woman laughed. “Same as yesterday, Lonzo. Asking every day isn’t going to change the answer. The children are at school and doing well. My husband is still working the same job he’s had for years.”

Lonzo chuckled. “Yes, ma’am. Glad things are doing well. Boss man in?”

“Of course.”

Lonzo leaned on Priscilla’s desk. “Tell me. Does he ever go home?”

“Not often.”

“Has he ever married?”

“Why all the questions?” Priscilla asked.

“He never answers them. I figure you know enough about him after working here so long.”

“How long do you think I have worked for him?”

Lonzo shrugged. “Longer than I have.”

Priscilla scowled. “Naturally. As far as I know, he has never married. Now, get into the boss man’s office before he comes out to find you cavorting with the secret’ry.”

Lonzo stood and saluted. “Yes, ma’am.” He knocked on the office door before opening it. “Mornin’, Captain. What’s the job today?”

“Come in and close the door,” Captain Bertram said.

Lonzo did so and sat down. “You look serious.”

“I am. We’ve learned of a kidnapping. It happened two days ago near Fort Worth. I need you to go with Zachariah and find the child.”

“Yes, sir. Where is Zachariah, and when do we leave?”

“Go home and pack your bags. Zachariah will meet you here in thirty minutes.”

“Yes, sir.” Heart pounding, Lonzo headed out the door, barely registering Priscilla’s farewell. Who would kidnap a child? And why? He hurried home, packed his saddlebags, and saddled his horse. Food. He had some bread that would survive the trip. Hopefully they could get more food in Fort Worth. After stuffing the bread into a saddlebag, he swung up onto the saddle and trotted down to the Rangers’ office.

A large man stood next to a black horse. “Lonzo?”

“Yes. You must be Zachariah?”

“I am. I got permission to leave for Fort Worth. I know a few more details than you and will brief you on the way.”

“Yes, sir.” Lonzo followed Zachariah out of town and then moved next to him to get the details.

“The child walked home from school as usual but never arrived home. A couple friends saw him a few houses from his home.
